Volunteer opportunities

To make our coop work, we all need to chip in. Therefore, each member is asked to volunteer for four hours every four weeks. Here are volunteer positions that are currently open. To sign up, get in touch with the contact listed for each position.


Coop Leaders Needed

Pick up a leadership position! Help grow yourself and the community.

  • Have a unique talent you want to contribute? Or want responsibility of a smaller role? There are many smaller and still crucial positions on committees that need filling.
  • All hours contributed to the Bushwick Food Coop count toward the 4 hr/4 wk work requirement. Hours can be banked toward future time off.
  • We expect leaders to self motivate to prioritize, initiate, collaborate, communicate and mobilize toward their role’s goals.

Membership Co-head / Orientations Co-Coordinator

When: Whenever is needed, but especially Sundays and Mondays of Orientations and General Meetings
What: With 2 other co-heads, and Orientations Co-Coordinator.  Writing and maintaining Membership Manual and creating/giving/training others to give Membership Orientations, and delegating tasks and responsibilities to and collaborating with Membership Committee members.  Membership Co-Heads are also responsible for attending general meetings and holding Membership Committee meetings.
Hour commitment: about 12 hours per month
Note: Perfect for someone with project management experience, or anyone really passionate and committed to making the co-op run smoothly! Must be dedicated and ready to respond promptly to phone calls and e-mails. Must be an excellent communicator and people person, detail-oriented, and problem solver.

Sourcing Co-head

Responsibilities include, with one other co-head:

  • Overseeing content, quality, and quantity of items carried in store.
  • Overseeing stock, ordering, cataloging, and inter-committee communications.
  • Interviews new products to carry.  Or discontinue.
  • Maintains Coop commitment to sustainability and local economies.
  • Trains new committee members, holds monthly Sourcing committee meeting.
  • Attends general and all-committees meetings.

Hour commitment: about 12 hours per month

Meeting Co-managers

Responsibilities include:

  • Attending meetings first and last Mondays of the month.
  • Writing up the agendas for committee review ahead of time.
  • Train in consensus-based decision-making and meeting facilitation. Train others.
  • Arrive to meetings early to set up, print agenda and sign-in sheet.

Work takes 7 to 10 hours every 4 weeks.

Work Co-Coordinator

Map out work in Committees.  Help members access available work.Responsibilities include:
  • Attend Committees meetings.
  • Work with Committee Heads to map out work for their committees.
  • Help members access available work by updating work board and binder in coop, and by submitting shifts for the work shift scheduler to fill.
  • Help create and fine-tune avenues of communication and data flow.

Availability: ~2-3/week.  Email communications; response time within 6 hours on most days for most things.  Good for someone on the computer often.
Talents: email, phone, spreadsheets, organization, basic graphics skills for in store print and email communications.

Newsletter Editor

Do you love writing? Being in the know? Sharing information? We need you!
We are looking for a newsletter editor to join the Communications Committee. Your responsibilities will include:
  • Being in contact with BFC committees and knowing what needs to be included in the weekly newsletter.
  • Drafting, editing and proofreading newsletter.
  • Sharing newsletter with Co heads prior to sending out.
  • Currently newsletter goes out Monday nights (this can be subject to change)
Hour commitment: about 2 to 4 hours a week, at first expect it to be on the higher end. Approximately 10-12 hours a month.

Grant writers

Responsibilities include:

  • Researching possible grants for the Coop.
  • Writing grants for the coop.
  • Find a 501c3 non-profit sponsor.

Crowd Funding Campaign

Volunteers needed to plan and execute crowd funding campaign; our biggest effort to grow the Bushwick Food Coop to date. Help make the Coop huge.

Siting Co-Head

Responsibilities include, with one other co-head:

  • Responding to and organizing work for store infrastructure needs and maintenance tasks.
  • Search for possible long-term sites that fits the Coop’s needs and goals.  Maintains relations with current and potential landlords and real estate friends.
  • Trains new committee members, holds monthly Siting committee meeting.
  • Attends general and all-committees meetings.

Hour commitment: about 12 hours per month
Note: Perfect for someone with building and project management experience.  Must be dedicated and ready to respond reasonably promptly to phone calls and e-mails.  Must be an excellent communicator and people person.

Interested in being a Committee Co-Head?

Please review: Committee Heads/Managers responsibilities.

(1)     Term: 6 months;
(2)     Check BFC email (respond within 3 days, within 24hrs or sooner for time sensitive items);
(3)     Subscribe to google group (be part of conversations that require input from you/your committee; respond within 3 days, within 24hrs to time sensitive items);
(4)     Write monthly report for committees/general meeting;
(5)     Attend Committees Meeting (write report and send someone to represent committee in your absence);
(6)     Attend General Monthly Meeting (write report and send someone to represent committee in your absence);
(7)     Help lead one Orientation;
(8)     Hold monthly committee meetings (to brainstorm and organize for continuous operations and long term goals, create proposals to bring to Committees Meetings and to membership vote);
(9)     Create, develop short and long term goals and a strategy and schedule how to reach them, further committee operations infrastructure;
(10)   Meet with, empower, train new committee members;
(11)  Coordinate efforts of various committee members (toward continuous operations and long term goals);
(12)  Create work slots — Strategy: AS SOON AS YOU LEARN TO DO SOMETHING, TRAIN SOMEONE ELSE TO DO IT. Minimize your continuous tasks as committee head.
(13)  Alert other committee heads and committee members well ahead of time of availability changes/absences/tasks or responsibilities you can not complete;
(14)  Identify replacement(s) as far ahead of time as you can;
(15)  Train replacement, at least last month
